EV vs. Gas: What Driving Actually Costs in Your State

Is charging an EV cheaper than buying gas?

At the U.S. average residential electricity rate and 3.3 miles per kWh, charging an EV at home costs about 5.6 cents per mile, versus about 16.0 cents per mile for a 27-MPG gas car at the national average pump price. The gap narrows with a high-MPG hybrid or expensive electricity; the calculator lets you check your own numbers.

What does it cost to charge an EV at home?

At the U.S. average rate of 18.34 cents per kWh, driving 100 miles uses about 30 kWh, or roughly $5.5. A full charge depends on the battery: a 75-kWh pack at that rate is about $13.76.

Does this include the $7,500 EV tax credit?

No. The federal EV purchase tax credit expired September 30, 2025. This page compares only the cost of fuel, electricity versus gasoline, to drive a mile, not the purchase price, depreciation, insurance, or maintenance of either vehicle.

Oil price shocks since 1973

When was crude oil most expensive?

July 2008, in both nominal and real terms: U.S. refiners' composite acquisition cost averaged $129.03 per barrel that month, $196 in July 2026 dollars. The 1981 peak of $37.48 ($141 real) is the second-highest real reading.

When was crude oil cheapest?

In real terms, December 1998: $9.81 per barrel, about $20 in July 2026 dollars, at the bottom of the 1997–99 collapse. April 2020 came close: $19.32 nominal, and daily futures prices briefly went below zero that month.

What price series is this?

EIA's refiner acquisition cost of crude oil, composite: the average price U.S. refiners actually paid for domestic and imported crude delivered to their refineries, monthly since January 1974 (EIA series R0000____3). The 1973–74 embargo episode alone uses EIA's FOB cost of imported crude, which begins in October 1973. Spot benchmarks like WTI and Brent only begin in 1986, which is why this older series carries the shocks page.

Why show both nominal and real prices?

Because inflation reshapes the story: the 1981 peak looks low in nominal dollars ($37.48) and severe in real ones ($141). Real values deflate by CPI-U (BLS series CUUR0000SA0, all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted) into constant July 2026 dollars. October 2025 has no CPI value; BLS never published one after the fall 2025 federal funding lapse, so that month is omitted from the real series.

What is happening to oil prices in 2026?

What share of the world's oil does OPEC produce?

34.2% in 2025: 34,379 thousand barrels per day of the world's 100,590, counting today's 12 members (Energy Institute Statistical Review). The share peaked at 50.0% in 1973 and bottomed at 26.5% in 1985.

Which country produces the most oil?

The United States, at 21,065 thousand barrels per day in 2025 (20.9% of the world), the highest single-country total in any year of the series back to 1965. Saudi Arabia produced 11,408 and Russia 10,737. The figures count crude oil, condensates and natural gas liquids.

Did OPEC's production fall as its share fell?

No. OPEC produced 29,273 thousand barrels per day in 1973 and 34,379 in 2025, up 17% across 52 years, while the world market grew 72%. The share fell because everyone else grew faster, led by the United States.

Which countries are in OPEC?

U.S. Gasoline Affordability: Work Time per Gallon

How affordable is gasoline in the U.S. right now?

In July 2026, one gallon of gasoline (all types, U.S. city average, $4.24) cost 7.9 minutes of work at the average private-sector hourly wage of $32.28. The average over every month since 1978 is 7.7 minutes, so gasoline currently takes more work time than the long-run average. Measured this way, July 2026 was cheaper than 38% of all months on record.

How many gallons of gas does one hour of work buy?

7.6 gallons in July 2026, at the national level: $32.28 in average hourly earnings divided by $4.24 per gallon. By state the answer ranges from 4.4 gallons in Nevada to 10.1 in District of Columbia, using each state's median hourly wage (OEWS, May 2025) and its current pump price.

Are gas prices rising faster than wages?

Over the twelve months to July 2026, the U.S. city-average gasoline price moved +24.0% while average hourly earnings moved +3.2%, so the work-time cost of a gallon changed +20.1% (from 6.6 to 7.9 minutes).

When was gasoline hardest to afford?

Measured in work time, the hardest month on record was July 2008 at 13.8 minutes of work per gallon; the easiest was February 1999 at 4.6 minutes. Dollar prices alone cannot show this, because wages more than quadrupled over the same period.

Which measure of gasoline affordability is right?

There is no single right one. Work time per gallon answers a different question than price alone, and a state ranking built on median wages answers a different question than one built on average wages or household budgets. Every figure on this page names its definition and its source month, and no composite index is used.

How much oil is in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve right now?

The SPR held 285.0 million barrels of crude oil in the week ending September 11, 2026, per EIA weekly data. That is 39.9% of its 714 million barrels of authorized storage capacity.

Why is the SPR at its lowest level since 1982?

On March 11, 2026, President Trump authorized the Department of Energy to release 172 million barrels over approximately 120 days, per DOE's announcement, as the U.S. share of a 400-million-barrel collective action by IEA member countries during the 2026 Middle East supply disruption. DOE executed the program as emergency exchanges. The section above carries the sourced timeline and the measured weekly decline.

Who can order oil out of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve?

It depends on the mechanism. Emergency drawdowns are ordered by the President. The Department of Energy also runs smaller test sales and exchanges, and Congress has directed sales by law, per DOE's release history.

What is the difference between an emergency drawdown, an exchange, and a mandated sale?

In an emergency drawdown, oil is sold after a Presidential order. In an exchange, companies borrow SPR crude and later return it plus additional premium barrels. In a congressionally mandated sale, DOE sells volumes that Congress directed in legislation. All three appear in DOE's release history; the 2026 release is being executed as emergency exchanges.

How fast can SPR oil reach the market?

DOE puts maximum nominal drawdown capability at 4.4 million barrels per day (as of August 5, 2026), and states oil can enter the U.S. market about 13 days after a Presidential decision, per DOE's SPR Quick Facts (13-day figure verified August 30, 2026).

Is the SPR the same as U.S. oil reserves?

No. The SPR is the federal government's emergency stockpile of already-produced crude oil in salt caverns. It is not U.S. proved oil reserves in the ground, and it is not the commercial crude inventory that refiners hold.

What Is a Crack Spread?

What is a crack spread?

A crack spread estimates a refinery's gross margin by subtracting the cost of crude oil from the value of a fixed mix of refined products. It is only a benchmark. This is not refinery profits because it excludes actual crude inputs and product yields, as well as energy, transportation, RIN, and operating costs.

How is the NY Harbor 3-2-1 calculated?

This page uses two barrels of NY Harbor conventional regular gasoline and one barrel of New York Harbor ULSD, converts product prices from gallons to barrels, subtracts three barrels of WTI, and divides by three.

Why can diesel and gasoline cracks move differently?

They are separate product markets. Seasonal demand, inventories, refinery outages and trade can change gasoline or diesel prices even when the WTI leg is unchanged.

Why Are Gas Prices Going Up (and Why So High)?

Why did gas prices go up today?

As of September 16, 2026, the AAA national average for regular rose 3.8¢ from yesterday, to $4.37 per gallon; over the past week it rose 14.3¢. The larger move is the year: $1.18 higher than the $3.19 of a year ago, which the sections above trace to crude oil.

Why is gas so much more expensive in California than in Texas?

State taxes, fuel-blend rules, and refinery and pipeline access, not different crude prices. Crude trades on a world market, so every state pays about the same for it. California averages $6.04 against $3.75 in Indiana, a spread of $2.29. Our gas-prices hub decomposes every state's price into crude, taxes, and everything else.

Do gas prices fall as fast as they rise?

Nearly. From 2020 through August 2026, in the 21 months when the crude in a gallon rose by 10 cents or more, the pump price captured 100% of that increase within the same month. In the 20 months when crude fell by 10 cents or more, the pump price gave back 96% of the decrease. Both figures compare EIA's monthly WTI crude, converted to dollars per gallon, with the monthly average of EIA's weekly pump price. The gap is real but small.

How much of the price of gas is taxes?

About 12% of the national average right now: the federal 18.4¢ a gallon plus a simple average of state taxes of 33.6¢ (Tax Foundation, 2026), or $0.52 of a $4.37 gallon. State rates vary by tens of cents, which is the main reason two neighboring states can differ on the same crude.

Is this the highest gas has ever been? Reader question

No. Regular averaged $4.32 the week of September 14, 2026 (EIA). The record is $5.01, the week of June 13, 2022, so this week is 69 cents below it. Adjusted for inflation (CPI-U, July 2026 dollars), the record belongs to June 30, 2008: $4.09 then is $6.25 today, and the $5.01 of June 13, 2022 is $5.64. Diesel is a different story: $6.29 the week of September 14, 2026 is a record, above the previous high of $5.81 the week of June 20, 2022. The diesel page traces it to refining.

Why isn't the Keystone Pipeline helping keep gas prices down? Reader question

Three reasons. First, Keystone carries crude oil, not gasoline or diesel. It delivers Canadian crude to Midwest and Gulf Coast refineries, and the fuel still has to be refined. Refiners' gasoline margin (the NY Harbor crack spread) is $1.10 a gallon, 2.7× its 2015–2019 average of $0.40, and U.S. refineries are running near capacity. That margin, not the cost of moving crude, is where this year's extra cost sits. Second, the existing Keystone system is already running (about 594,000 barrels a day in late 2025, per operator South Bow); the never-built Keystone XL extension was terminated in June 2021, and as of September 2026 a partial revival is at the planning stage with a decision targeted for mid-2027. Third, pipelines move crude; they do not price it. Crude trades on a world market, Canada already supplies about 3.9 million barrels a day to U.S. refiners, and a Department of Energy study required by the 2021 infrastructure law found the pump-price effect of Keystone XL "inconclusive."

Why Is Diesel More Expensive Than Gas (and Why So High)?

Why is diesel more expensive than gas?

Three structural reasons and one 2026 reason. Structurally, per EIA: distillate demand is strong at home and abroad, ultra-low-sulfur diesel costs more to make, and the federal excise tax on diesel is 24.4¢ a gallon against 18.4¢ on gasoline. In 2026 the gap widened far past those causes: the IEA reports that the drop in Russian middle-distillate exports sent regular buyers scrambling for alternative supply and bidding up diesel cracks, while U.S. refineries were already running near capacity. Diesel is $6.31 against $4.37 for regular as of September 16, 2026, a gap of $1.94.

Was diesel always more expensive than gasoline?

No. In EIA's weekly survey, diesel averaged less than regular gasoline in 5 of the years from 1994 to 2005; every full year from 2005 on has averaged higher. This year's average gap so far, $1.14, is wider than any full year in the series; the previous record was $1.04 in 2022.

Are U.S. refineries running at full capacity?

Close to it. EIA's weekly survey put utilization at 96.8% of operable capacity for the week ending September 11, 2026, the 15th consecutive week at or above 95%, the longest such run since 1998. Refiners run that hard when product margins reward every extra barrel, which is what the diesel crack spread is showing.

Will diesel prices go down?

EIA projects they will. Its Short-Term Energy Outlook as of September 16, 2026 has U.S. diesel averaging $5.07 a gallon in 2026 and $4.40 in 2027. That is EIA's projection, reissued monthly, not ours.

Which state has the most expensive diesel?

California, at $8.27 a gallon in AAA's survey, against $5.85 in Colorado, a spread of $2.41. Every state page on the gas prices hub shows its diesel average next to regular.

Are Data Centers Raising Electricity Prices?

Are data centers driving up electricity prices?

The evidence so far says no, but that could change. A June 2026 causal study by EPRI researchers estimates data centers caused average US retail electricity rates to fall modestly from 2015 to 2024, and descriptive state-level comparisons agree that states with more data centers do not have higher or faster-rising rates. Both caution that future supply constraints could reverse the effect.

Why would data centers lower electricity rates?

Grids carry large fixed costs. Durable new demand spreads those costs over more kilowatt-hours, and the study finds economies of scale in transmission, distribution and generation.

When do PJM capacity costs reach household bills?

Capacity charges take effect with each delivery year, which runs June through May. When they appear on a household bill varies by state and supplier; no single region-wide date exists.

Data Center Energy Use

How much electricity do US data centers use?

US data centers consumed an estimated 192 terawatt-hours in 2024, about 4.7% of total US electricity, according to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's 2025 Update.

How much electricity will data centers use by 2030?

LBNL's Reference Case projects 649 TWh in 2030, about 11.8% of forecast US electricity, with a scenario range of 521 to 843 TWh (9.5% to 15.3%).

Do data centers raise electricity prices?

The evidence so far says no, but that could change. Over the 12 months through June 2026, the largest residential rate increases were in Hawaii (+28.7%), Idaho (+19.1%), Washington (+15.0%), per EIA monthly retail sales data. The ranked table above covers all 50 states and DC.

Why did my electric bill go up if my utility didn't announce a rate increase?

Base rates are only one piece of a bill. Riders and surcharges, fuel or purchased-power adjustment clauses, and, in retail-choice states, supply prices can all move a bill without a headline rate case. The figures on this page are average effective rates (revenue ÷ sales), so they capture all of those together. The drivers are covered on Why is my electric bill so high?

How current are these numbers?

EIA publishes monthly retail data about two months after the fact; this page shows data through June 2026 and states that month wherever a figure appears. We never project unpublished months, and EIA's revisions are logged on the data updates page.

Are these rates the same as my tariff?

No. These are average effective prices: everything residential customers paid divided by the kWh they used, including fixed charges, riders and taxes collected through rates. Your tariff's marginal price will differ. For your own utility's average, use the ZIP code lookup.

What is the difference between a requested and an approved rate increase?

A utility files a request; the state commission decides. Settlements and final orders routinely cut requested amounts substantially, so summing requested with approved dollars overstates what customers will pay. This page always reports the two separately, and a row moves from requested to approved only when the commission issues its decision.

How does Texas fit in, with its deregulated market?

In most of Texas, the regulated rate case applies to the delivery utility (Oncor, CenterPoint and others), while the supply price comes from competitive retail providers. Texas ledger rows are delivery-charge cases and are labeled as such.

What is energy poverty in the United States?

The United States has no single federal statutory definition of energy poverty. Federal law uses the phrase once in an international-cooperation finding without defining it; LIHEAP law instead targets low-income households with high home-energy costs relative to income.

What is energy burden?

Energy burden is the share of household income spent on home energy. DOE LEAD uses average housing energy cost divided by average household income and calls 6% or more high burden. Energy Factbook reports that convention but does not adopt a threshold.

Where would the average household's energy bill be highest?

Priced at each state's 2024 residential rates, the average U.S. household's actual fuel purchases would cost the most in Hawaii ($6,886 per year) and the least in North Dakota ($1,718), against $2,495 at national-average prices. This is a pure price comparison; the bundle of fuels is the same for every state.

What is household energy insecurity?

EIA RECS uses household energy insecurity for reported experiences such as reducing food or medicine, keeping the home at an unhealthy temperature, receiving a disconnection notice, or being unable to use heating or air conditioning.

Does this page add gasoline costs to home energy?

No. Gasoline is shown separately as minutes of work per gallon and is never added to the home-energy ratio.

How Much Electricity Does Big Tech Use?

How much electricity does Google use?

Google reported 32.2 million MWh of company-wide electricity consumption in 2024, about 96% of it in data centers, per its 2025 Environmental Report.

How much electricity does Microsoft use?

Microsoft reported 37.0 million MWh of electricity in fiscal year 2025 (ending June 30, 2025), per its 2026 Environmental Data Fact Sheet.

Does Amazon disclose its electricity use?

No. Amazon's sustainability reports state that its electricity is 100% matched with renewable energy but publish no absolute consumption total.

How to Read Your Electric Bill

Can a bill prove that I may choose an electricity supplier?

No. A named third-party supplier or choice notice is a strong clue, but a bundled bill is not proof that choice is unavailable. EIA says to confirm with the distribution utility or state utility commission.

Why can my effective rate exceed the advertised energy price?

The advertised energy price may cover supply only. The effective rate divides current-period total electricity charges, including delivery and other signed line items, by billed kWh.

What should a renter check when electricity comes through the landlord?

Ask whether the unit is individually submetered or the building's master bill is allocated. Texas's submetering rule and master-meter allocation rule illustrate how a commission can regulate the two arrangements; rules vary by jurisdiction.

Is nuclear power growing in the United States?

Annual net generation is recovering: it increased for 3 consecutive years through 2025, reaching 784.8 TWh, but remained below the 2019 peak of 809.4 TWh. Source: EIA electric power operational data.

How many nuclear plants and reactors are operating in the United States?

The July 2026 preliminary EIA-860M inventory contains 94 reactors with OP status at 54 plants. That matches EIA FAQ 207, which reports 94 operating commercial reactors at 54 plants as of March 2026.

What is the largest U.S. nuclear power plant?

Vogtle is the largest, with four reactors and 4,530 MW of net summer capacity as of March 2026, according to EIA FAQ 207.

Where does the uranium bought by U.S. nuclear plants come from?

In 2025, Canada supplied 32% of purchases, Kazakhstan 28%, Australia 15%, and the United States 7%, according to the EIA Uranium Marketing Annual Report.

What Is Curtailment?

What is curtailment in electricity?

Curtailment is a deliberate reduction of output from a power plant below what it could have produced, ordered or priced in by the grid operator, most often because supply exceeds demand on the wider system or because a local transmission constraint cannot carry the power away. It is an operating tool, not an outage: the plant is available, and the grid instructs or prices it down.

Why is solar power curtailed?

Mostly timing. Solar output peaks midday, and in spring the combination of strong sun and mild demand produces more midday energy than the system can absorb or export. In the California ISO, March and April are the heaviest curtailment months on average across the series, and EIA reported that 93% of the 3.4 million MWh CAISO curtailed in 2024 was solar (EIA, May 28, 2025).

How much wind and solar is curtailed?

In the California ISO, 241,073 MWh of wind and solar output was curtailed in July 2026, and 4.79 million MWh in 2026 through July (+53% vs the same months of 2025). No comparably clean public series exists for the other U.S. grid operators, so this page does not publish a multi-region total.

What is the difference between generation curtailment and load curtailment?

Generation curtailment reduces a power plant's output; load curtailment reduces customers' consumption. Both words appear in the news as just "curtailment." PJM's board directed a FERC filing on July 27, 2026 under which, during capacity shortages, new large loads (50 MW or more at a site) that do not bring their own generation by June 1, 2027 and have not otherwise secured supply would be curtailed before Pre-Emergency Load Management reaches other customers (PJM).

Is curtailment wasted energy?

Curtailed output is energy a plant could have generated and did not, so nothing is physically consumed or lost; what is forgone is low-cost generation that was available. Whether that is a problem is an economic question about transmission, storage and pricing, and grid operators treat some level of curtailment as a normal, least-cost operating outcome. This page reports the measured quantities and leaves the label to the reader.

What Uses the Most Electricity in a Home?

Does the national ranking describe my particular home?

No. EIA's 2020 RECS estimates a national all-home average. Climate, fuels, equipment and household behavior can change the order for one home.

Is the ZIP utility price my tariff rate?

No. It is an EIA average effective price, calculated as residential revenue divided by sales. It is not an individual tariff or a marginal savings estimate.

Can this table calculate an appliance's hourly cost?

No. Hourly cost depends on the particular unit's wattage. Check its nameplate and its EnergyGuide label; this page does not substitute a national-average end-use share for wattage.

Why Is My Electric Bill So High?

How much of U.S. electricity do data centers use?

About 4.7% in 2024 (192 TWh), per LBNL's 2025 Update. Its Reference Case projects 11.8% by 2030, within a 9.5% to 15.3% scenario range.

Do data centers raise residential electric bills?

In the PJM region, the independent market monitor calculates that including data-center load in the last three capacity auctions' forecasts raised gross capacity-market revenues by $23.1 billion versus reruns without it, a counterfactual result rather than a measured bill impact. The effect varies by region; areas with little data-center growth see less of it.

Why did my bill go up if my usage didn't?

Then the rate or the bill structure changed: a higher per-kWh rate, a higher fixed charge, a new rider, an expired supply contract, or a time-of-use plan. Compare the per-kWh price and fixed charges on this bill to the same month last year.

Will electricity prices go down in 2026?

We track published data rather than forecast. As of June 2026, the U.S. average rate was up +5.0% year over year, and EIA's May 2025 analysis expected retail prices to keep rising through 2026.

Global EV Sales

What percentage of cars sold worldwide are electric?

24% of global new-car sales in the first half of 2026 were electric (battery-electric plus plug-in hybrid), one point higher than a year earlier. The IEA expects about 29%, roughly 23 million cars, for the full year (IEA, Electric Car Markets in a Time of Uncertainty, July 2026).

What share of new cars in China are electric?

Over 60% in the second quarter of 2026, and the IEA expects the full-year share to exceed 60% for the first time, on about 13.2 million electric car sales, similar to 2025.

Why are Chinese EV exports rising so fast?

Domestic Chinese car sales fell over 20% year on year in the first half of 2026, and manufacturers shifted to export markets: total car exports grew 65% and electric car exports over 120%, taking electric cars to more than 45% of China's car exports. The IEA also estimates over 1 million exported electric cars had not yet been registered as sales anywhere, pointing to inventory build-ups abroad.

Is a Heat Pump Worth It in 2026?

Is there still a federal tax credit for heat pumps?

Not for a system placed in service in 2026. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C), which was worth 30% of the cost up to $2,000 for a qualifying heat pump, applies only to property placed in service before December 31, 2025, per the IRS. state rebate programs funded by the Inflation Reduction Act are separate and some are still running, so check your state before assuming there is nothing available.

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than what I have now?

It depends entirely on what you heat with. On this season's prices a heat pump costs less to run than propane in 38 of 38 states with data, less than heating oil in 21 of 21, and less than electric baseboard heat in all 51. Against natural gas it wins in only 20 of 51 states. Find your state in the table above.

Why does a heat pump beat electric baseboard heat by so much when both run on electricity?

A heat pump moves heat instead of creating it. We use a coefficient of performance of 2.8, meaning 2.8 units of heat per unit of electricity, from ENERGY STAR, so it uses about a third of the power for the same warmth. Nationally that is $18.7/MMBtu against $52.2/MMBtu for resistance heat, or about $1,675 a season on a typical 50 MMBtu heating load.

If natural gas is cheaper, is a heat pump still worth considering?

Running cost is one input. A heat pump also provides cooling, which a furnace does not, so if you would otherwise buy both a furnace and an air conditioner the comparison changes. Gas prices and electricity rates also move at different speeds. This page reports the running-cost math; the equipment decision includes factors we do not measure.

What do heat pumps cost to install?

We do not publish a national average, because quotes vary widely by home, system size, ductwork, and region, and a single figure would mislead more than it helps. The largest U.S. study of the question, a simulation of 550,000 representative households published in Joule in 2024, reports bill savings but likewise publishes no single national installed cost, naming high installation cost as the main barrier. The calculator on this page takes your own quote and returns the payback using your state's measured running-cost saving.

Is Solar Worth It in 2026?

Is there still a 30% federal tax credit for solar?

Not for a system placed in service in 2026. A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, delivering about 2.8 units of heat per unit of electricity, so it uses roughly a third of the power for the same warmth. This past season that made heat-pump heat about $18.7 per million Btu nationally, versus about $52.2 for electric resistance, roughly 2.8 times cheaper.

Is propane more expensive than natural gas for heating?

Almost always, per unit of heat. This past season propane delivered heat cost about $30.3 per million Btu nationally versus about $16.3 for natural gas, because propane is sold by the gallon and trucked in. Many rural homes use propane only because no natural gas line reaches them.

How do I compare a price per gallon of oil to a price per Mcf of gas?

Convert both to delivered heat. A gallon of heating oil holds about 0.1385 million Btu and a thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas about 1.037 million Btu; divide the price by the heat content times the furnace efficiency.
