How Much Electricity Does Big Tech Use?

Company-reported figures · data as of 2025-10-31 · last verified 2026-08-15 · page updated August 15, 2026

In their own sustainability reports, Google reported 32.2 million MWh of company-wide electricity consumption for 2024 (96% of it in data centers), Microsoft 37.0 million MWh for its fiscal year ending June 2025, and Meta 18.4 million MWh for 2024. Each roughly doubled or more in five years. Apple reports 3.8 million MWh for its corporate facilities, a different and much smaller boundary. Amazon discloses no absolute electricity total at all. These are company-reported, unaudited figures with different reporting boundaries, so this page presents each company against its own history rather than ranking them against each other.

Google and Meta, calendar years

Google and Meta report the same boundary (company-wide operational electricity, data centers plus offices, calendar year), so they can share a chart:

Google  Meta  company-wide electricity, GWh

Google and Meta company-wide electricity consumption by calendar year, gigawatt-hours 7,000 14,000 21,000 28,000 35,000 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 Google and Meta electricity use roughly doubled 2020-2024 Google 2024: 32,180 GWh Meta 2024: 18,424 GWh Google Meta

Microsoft, fiscal years

Microsoft electricity consumption by fiscal year (ends June 30), GWh

Microsoft electricity consumption by fiscal year ending June 30, gigawatt-hours 14,000 21,000 28,000 35,000 42,000 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 Microsoft electricity use nearly tripled FY2021-FY2025 Microsoft 2025: 37,026 GWh
