About Energy Factbook

Updated July 21, 2026

Energy Factbook answers one question well: what does energy actually cost you? Every number derives from official government data, primarily the U.S. Energy Information Administration, with the exact source, formula, and publication lag disclosed on every page.

What we do differently

Who is behind Energy Factbook

Energy Factbook is a project of Daniel Simmons, principal of Simmons Energy & Environmental Strategies. Daniel has worked in energy and environmental policy for 28 years, including four years at the U.S. Department of Energy, where he served as the Senate-confirmed Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, overseeing a research portfolio of roughly $2 billion a year covering renewable energy, transportation technologies, and manufacturing technologies. This site applies the approach that career was built on: lead with the data, name the source for every number, and let readers draw their own conclusions.
